This data set is a collection of Moose and Wolf sightings from all over North America. First, I cleaned up the data using OpenRefine. Next, I wanted to visualize where these submissions were and still are coming from, so I decided to geolocate the dataset and map it using ArcGIS. I also used Java to calculate which years had the most sightings reported in order to better understand changing opinions on animal population monitoring. Both of my efforts were a success, although there were some challenges along the way. This page has links to all of my work, pictures of most of it, and a thorough description of the steps I took.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The data I used was pulled mostly from iNaturalist, a wildlife-sighting reporting application. Through iNaturalist, my source was effectively anyone and everyone who submitted a sighting of either wolves or moose in North America. Not all of the information in the dataset was necessary for my purposes, so I used OpenRefine to remove columns such as geoprivacy and timezone. I also standardized the formatting of the submission times by removing some data points myself and using the below GREL function to remove all of the information outside of MM\/DD\/YY. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>value.replace(\/\\s.+\/, &#8221;)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After all of these changes, my dataset ended up looking like <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/e\/2PACX-1vSYJKkNS6o2FHcqCmSEY89_-cD1uqh6Nz_CoNzquIhkukeKSQIBMm12FOjIDW_eEOmLyRx1ytss75JN\/pubhtml\">this<\/a>. (This link is slow, sorry!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the mapping process, I was immediately greeted with a roadblock, in that my dataset was so big that I had to figure out how to host it myself in order to add it as a map layer. It was also difficult to get the images themselves to appear in each data point&#8217;s popup rather than only the images&#8217; links. I also modified the data points&#8217; color scheme to correspond with their &#8220;common names&#8221; in the legend and further modified the popups. Also, the ratio of moose to wolves shows just how many individual prey have to exist for each individual predator in order to keep a food web in balance. I custom-made my own Web App because none of the presets perfectly fit my needs. User interactivity includes visiting the iNaturalist posts for each sighting\/point and viewing the specifications of each point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next, I wanted to look at the changing number of reported sightings throughout the years. The only way I could think to do so was using Java. Long story short, I imported the dates column from the dataset into a text file and made a program to iterate through this text file and keep track of how many times each year showed up. Looking at this correlation, one might assume that sightings are increasing because the number of moose and wolves is increasing. This is actually not the case: both populations are declining rapidly. I would argue that the upward trend is for two main reasons. Firstly, the access to and use of wildlife-sighting reporting applications like iNaturalist has increased greatly. Additionally, the declining numbers of wolves and moose have likely caused an increased interest in monitoring these populations. I believe my chart shows that the effort to conserve and protect wildlife ecosystems has extended to the general public since the 2000s. This theory is all the more likely because some of the longitudes &amp; latitudes are encrypted, showing increased concern surrounding poachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These insights, along with the ones gained from the digital map, provide new perspectives on the animal populations of North America. But more than that, from a humanistic, anthropological standpoint, these insights reflect on the changing human treatment of these populations. Presenting the dataset in these ways reveals that the community of environmental-protectionists is growing. Specifically, the digital map shows off where the most wildlife-watchers do their work, and the chart shows off when they began to work in force.
